Our tournament is on!! However, we will now be playing at Westlake HS, as the fields at WCRP have been closed due to the wet weather.
Players are to be at the fields by 8:00am, and should plan to be there until 5:00pm to help with clean-up and whatever else needs to be done after the tournament. Players who are academically-ineligible to play are still expected to be at the tournament to assist the coaching staff, and to help afterwards. Uniform will be practice jersey and black/white WW lacrosse shorts. Please dress warmly and appropriately for the weather tomorrow (black leggings, sweats, hats, face masks, etc.), as it is supposed to be in the low 30's in the morning. Brrrrrrrrr!
We will be playing on the turf practice fields that we played on for the Westlake Round Robin. Westbank Drive loops around to the fields, but you will have to park in the lot across from the fields, on the other side of Westbank Drive. No parking will be allowed next to the fields, or you will be fined or towed.
Note: No food is allowed on the fields. No drinks except water are allowed onto the fields. We cannot set up our Hospitality Tent, but we will have coolers with drinks, fruit and energy/granola bars available for the players.

Today's Practice 1/7

Be prepared for today's blast!
Every weatherman, woman, and child seems to be predicting arctic conditions for today's practice, but unless road conditions are dangerous, we will hold practice. All players should come to practice fully equipped, as usual, but please consider wearing extra layers (tights/sweats/etc.) to keep your muscles warm, since we will be testing your speed and agility today. Beanies and balaclavas and chap stick are a good way to protect your face from the cold wind. Also, keep in mind that the cold wind can be just as dehydrating as the searing heat, so please hydrate throughout the day.

Now that we have two teams and fewer home games, the need for volunteers for game day support has been reduced. Please only sign up for a maximum of 3 game day support positions until every family has had an opportunity to volunteer. We will re-evaluate the need for game day volunteers after February 1st, at which time we may have positions to fill. Also, if you have more than one player on the team, you only need to sign up for 3 total game day support positions at this time (per family, not player).

New Team Format
10/11/200911:20:20 AM Link | | Add comment
Dear Lacrosse Families,
In the twenty year history of Westwood Boys Lacrosse, we have seen steady but tremendous growth - both in popularity and numbers. Our program has always been open to all young men who want to join our team, whether for the camaraderie, the opportunity to compete, or the love of the game. Every athlete who plays lacrosse for Westwood joins the team with the expectation that he will have the opportunity to contribute to the success of the team.
Accommodating this growth while maintaining those expectations for opportunities to succeed has not been an easy task. It was only through multiple meetings, hours of deliberation, and thoughtful consideration of the input received from every parent, coach, and athlete that the Board and Coaching Staff were able to develop and pass with unanimity this carefully crafted solution: Westwood Boys Lacrosse will field one Varsity Team with a maximum of 28 athletes on a position-specific roster, and we will field as many Junior Varsity Teams as we can, with a minimum of 28 athletes on each of these JV teams. Under this structure, this year, our numbers will accommodate one JV team of approximately 37 players. There will be no "cuts" from our program.
Two years ago, we added a second varsity-level team to our program to allow more athletes more playing time, but the results have been mixed. Many have observed that our teams have gone from being too big for everyone to contribute, to being too small for anyone to succeed. Just as importantly, the projected future growth of our club calls for well considered foresight about how and why we should create individual team rosters.
While only 10 players can be on the field at any given moment, everyone involved in team sports knows that it takes many more athletes than just those in the starting lineup to maintain a successful team. Injuries, academic ineligibility, schedule conflicts, and unforeseen circumstances have challenged very talented Westwood teams in the past two years, due to lack of depth at each position. These same teams even practiced with a disadvantage, as they did not have the ability to conduct game-like full field practices.
In order to address all of these concerns, our teams will now maintain a 28-athlete roster. These 28 roster spots are position specific, so that, at full strength, a practice can be conducted with a "team" at each end of the field (a goalie, three attackmen, three close defensemen, three short stick middies, a long stick middie, and a second line of middies = 14 players x 2 = 28). On theVarsity team, we will cap our roster size at this level so that every player has a well defined role in contributing to the team's success.
Those players who do not earn one of the 28 Varsity positions will play for the Junior Varsity team. The JV team will serve to develop players' skills, while ensuring that every young man who joins Westwood Lacrosse will have an opportunity to play.. In fact, Westwood JV players will play a mixed schedule against Division 1 JV teams and Division 2 Varsity teams. Facing D2 Varsity competition will prepare each player for their next opportunity to earn a position on the Westwood Varsity squad.
With an established method for developing team rosters, our program is now prepared for the future. Should our numbers continue to grow, Westwood can consider adding additional teams at the JV level, as long as we have at least 28 athletes for each one. This is similar to the structure that allows Westwood's football program to continue without cuts (maintaining one varsity team and multiple JV teams).
The Junior Varsity team will be composed of players in two main sets: those that will have significant playing time against D2 Varsity teams and those that will have significant playing time against D1 JV teams. Of course, many, if not most, players will actually fit in both categories, filling significant roles in games against all opponents. With development in mind, the coaches will ensure that every JV player has an opportunity to put their skills to the test in live game environments.
For Varsity players, first line players will play significant roles in games against the team's strongest opponents, while second line players will have significant roles against other opponents, with most players contributing in all games.
It is important to note that every single player who joins our program will have an equal opportunity to earn a Varsity roster spot. As parents and coaches, we can not predetermine any player's specific playing time. The players alone, via their actions and demonstrations of commitment to their team's success, can determine the amount of time they will play in each game. This is the ultimate character building lesson learned in playing a team sport.
We are proud to move forward, even beyond this season, knowing that our program's structure will now purposefully facilitate our team's success while keeping the door open to any player who is willing to carry on the proud Westwood Warrior tradition.
Thank you for your continued support of your son and his team!

2010 Legal Heads Information
9/28/200911:03:16 PM Link | | Add comment
The NCAA Stick Head waiver was modified, allowing teams to claim the waiver for the 2010 season. However, if a team claims the waiver, then it must become a DIII team and compete at the DIII level. Since Westwood does not compete at the DIII level, players at Westwood will need a 2010 NCAA head to be compliant.
Please visit South Swell Sports to see the available heads and talk to a sales rep for more detailed information, but do not buy a head at that time or you will not receive the team discount.
Head order forms were distributed at the Parent Meeting in September and an attachment was sent in an email on Monday, September 28. If you still need a head order form, please send Teri Holmstrom an email at mholmstrom@austin.rr.com and she will send you an order form via email.
Please write your players name and your email on the order form before mailing to the Club's address. All checks sholud be written to Westwood Lacrosse. The ordering deadline for heads has been extended to October 6 to give everyone time to visit South Swell this week.

We are pleased to announce Jamie Booth as our program's new Offensive Coordinator. Coach Booth has been coaching youth and high school lacrosse for ten years. He most recently held the position of Head Coach at Stony Point, where he took his team to the state championships last season. More important than his winning record though, he helped redefine Stony Point's reputation and attitude, both on and off of the field. In discussions with him over the past few weeks, Coach Pailes feels that he will fit in perfectly with our philosophy of positive, character-based coaching, while also bringing a fresh eye to the most potent offense in the district. Welcome Coach Booth!

D2 Parents and Players,
Please click on the links included in the JV announcement regarding maps, tournament brackets, etc. I have sent you an e-mail with more information ~ please, please call me if you did not receive it (918-9781 or 922-2978). There have been some minor room assignment changes, which are listed in my e-mail.
Have your son pack lightly, if he's going with another parent. Bring chairs if you're coming to the tournament. If you are meeting us at Taco Cabana, please be there no later than 7:15 am. If you are not coming to the tournament, make sure your son has enough money with him for breakfast tacos at Taco Cabana, dinner on Saturday night, tournament t-shirt/souvenirs, and the ride home, should his ride stop to eat.
Again, if you did not get my earlier e-mail, please contact me. Thank you for your support.

We need at least two parent volunteers for the position of Game Day Administrator for the JV team for the upcoming season. The Game Day Administrator plays an important role for each of our teams. We must find at least 2 Game Day Administrator volunteers for the JV team to properly prepare for each game. Each Game Day Admin would be assigned 3-4 home games and 4-5 away games during the upcoming season. This position does fullfill the volunteer requirements for Game Day support. We have created a recap of the responsibilities of the Game Day Administrator that is available upon request. If you are interesed in additional information about the position or would like to become one of our Game Day Admins for our JV team, please contact Kent Jones at kjones4@austin.rr.com or Mike Morenz at mmorenz@austin.rr.com
Volunteer Recognition and Reminder

We would like to thank the following volunteers for their help earlier this year with our Car Wash Event. Janet Simpkins, Stan Miles, Sarah Swords, Andi Tasset, Jim Stanley, Kim Clower plus Event Coordinators - Theresa Knavel and Lynn Morenz.. Once again, this event has helped contribute to our budget and despite the normal "moans and groans" from a few players, the smiles on the kids faces would indicate everyone had fun. Thanks again to all the volunteers for this event.
As a reminder, each family must volunteer for 2 Social-Fundraising events and 5 Game Day or Field Prep days to fullfill their volunteer obligations. Event coordinators receive double credit because of their additional time committment. Please select the Volunteer tab above, navigate to the Event Volunteer page, and select the link at the bottom of the page to review our current recap of all Event volunteers for this year. If you have volunteered for an event and your name is not listed on the Event Volunteer log, please email the appropriate Coordinator to have your name added to the volunteer recap for that event. Game day and field prep volunteers will be listed on a seperate page.

Placing an ad in the 2009 lacrosse program is a great way to support your son and the Westwood lacrosse team. The process is easy. Simply take the form out of Pocket # 2 of the orange folder you received at the beginning of the season, complete it, and mail it along with your payment to the address on the form. If you'd like to include a picture, digital photos can be emailed to Joan at joan@joansspeak.com .
If you enjoy graphic design, you can create your own camera-ready ad and send it to Joan at the above email address. Still, mail the form and paperwork to the Club. If you would prefer us to put the ad together for you, fill out the form, email the picture or mail the hard-copy picture with the form if you are unable to scan. It's that simple.
This is also a great way to advertise your small business. The process is the same and the business advantage is time-tested.
Don't delay -- the deadline is THIS SATURDAY, January 17!!!!
Even if you email your documents to Joan, please send your payment and form to : Westwood Lacrosse Parents Club, 8650 Spicewood Springs Ste, 145-570, Austin, TX 78759-4399.

January Practice Announcement

Happy New Year . We hope your family had a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Please view our updated pre-season practice schedule posted under the calendar section of our website. Practices during January will be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday except during Finals week. Since we have limited access this year to the lighted practice fields at Town and Country, we have decided to set up a practice rotation schedule for Thursday nights. Each Thursday night, one team (D1-D2-JV) will be assigned to practice from 5pm to 6:15 pm at Canyon Vista, while the other 2 teams will practice at Town and Country. Although MOST players will initially be assigned to Thursday night practice fields based on their team assignment for the UT Tournament, some adjustments to the teams for UT will be made at the start of this week. Players will be notified during practice early this week which team they should practice with this coming Thursday. Once again, please remember the team assignments created for the UT tournament and the Thursday night practices in early January are still subject to change. Final team assignments will be announced near the end of January. Please visit the "pre-season" calendar for the Thursday night rotation schedule and practice times. Thanks to all the parents who made the hospitality tent a success. The hospitality tent is completely funded by the generous donations of parents. It allows all coaches, players and their parents a place to gather between games and grab a drink or snack. After teams are announced in January, I will be needing a Hospitality Coordinator for each team. If you are interested in this position, please contact Andi Tasset @ atasset@sbcglobal.net to get further information. Thank you again for donating coolers, tents, snacks, drinks and ice.

Player Rosters for UT Tournament
12/1/20082:15:26 PM Link | | Add comment
All ELIGIBLE players have been assigned to a team roster (D1, D2 or JV) for this weekend's UT Tournament. As a reminder, the initial team assignments for the regaular season are subject to change. Final team assignments will be made near the end of January. Please visit OUR TEAM-ROSTERS section of our website late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning to review player team assignments for UT. In some instances our coaching staff may invite selected players to participate with more than one team over the weekend.
Reminder...The Westwood Lacrosse No Pass No Play Policy is the same as UIL or RRISD policy as outlined in the OUR TEAM-ACADEMICS section of our website. A roster of players is presented periodically to our school sponsor, who then checks the list at each six-week grading period. Based on the recent recap from Westwood, we do have players who are ineligible to participate this weekend. Players who are not assigned to one of our three team lists posted on the website are NOT eligible to play this weekend according to our current records for one of the reasons listed below:
- Ineligible due to injury - Dr. release required to play
- Ineligible due to missing player dues or required forms
- Ineligible due to grades
If you believe we have made a mistake or if you have questions regarding "Eligible" players, please contact Coach Evan or Teri Holmstrom via email. Finally, the UT tournament schedule for Saturday's games has been posted on their website at www.utlacrosse.com . See you this weekend at UT.
SIGNED WAIVERS NEEDED

There are two signed waivers that are required before playing in the UT Longhorm Classic Tournament this weekend, December 6-7. One is a waiver from UT and the other form is from US Lacrosse. CLICK HERE to be directed to UT to print off the form for the tournament. CLICK HERE to be directed to the US Lacrosse site. Why is this form required? US Lacrosse requires their membership form to be on file.
If you have trouble printing out the forms, Teri Holmstrom will have forms available at the beginning of practice each day this week. She will be at Canyon Vista from 4:50 - 5:15.
When you have completed the forms, please put them in an envelope and either give to Teri before practice or mail to our po box. Please do NOT give the forms to the coaches.
We must have both forms before December 5.
Questions? Please email Teri Holmstrom at mholmstrom@austin.rr.com.

SAT and ACT Dates
11/2/200811:10:16 AM Link | | Add comment
This message is especially pertinent to parents of juniors, but there are some more widely applicable items here. If you son will be taking the SAT or ACT later this year, we have listed the dates below along with a cross reference to our current lacrosse schedule.
Remaining SAT testing dates this year are 12/6, 1/24, 3/14, 5/2, and 6/6. There are possible conflicts with some of these dates vs. lacrosse. 12/6 is Longhorn Shootout. 3/14 is the first Saturday of spring break. (We do not plan to schedule any lacrosse events that day.) 5/2 is the first weekend of district playoffs.
Remaining ACT testing dates are 12/13, 2/7, 4/4, and 6/13. On 2/7 there is a scheduled D1/JV game vs. Stony Point. 4/4 is a D1/JV game vs. Westlake (evening game). 6/13 is the weekend of the University of Denver team camp in Denver. This is relevant to those who play on summer travel teams (optional).
Update from Kent Jones on Spring Break
11/2/200811:01:58 AM Link | | Add comment
During registration, we asked if families would be interested in participating in a spring break lacrosse trip. We investigated playing in southern California, but found that we would not be allowed to play against the state-sanctioned California teams. We also investigated other options including traveling to Orlando to play at the Disney Sports Complex. This initially seemed feasible. Unfortunately, with the current state of the economy, additional families have declined interest. Currently the coaches feel that we would not be able to field a representative, competitive team. As such, we have suspended further planning for spring break.

We recenlty sent an email to the parents of this year's registered players who were on last year's DI or DII teams. The email was a survey designed to determine if we have enough players from the last year's teams who would be interested in particpating in a game against our alumni. We are trying to schedule the game for Saturday, November 29th from 10 am to 11:30 am.
Since our team assignments will not be finalized until January this year, the coaching staff suggested we invite players from both the DI and DII squad from last year. We need to confirm we will have enough players from this year's group of players to be able to field a team to play our alumni. If you did not receive the initial email, please contact Mike Morenz at mmorenz@austin.rr.com As soon as we receive responses to the survey, we will determine if we will be able to continue the tradition of a lacrosse alumni game over Thanksgiving weekend. If so, we will proceed to contact our alumni with an invitation to participate.2 Practices Cancelled

The deadline for completing the on-line registration for particpating in this year's lacrosse program is September 15, 2008. Although our official season does not start until January, we need parents to honor the registration deadline so we can determine the number of player committments we have for this year. The League has a "number of registered players" requirement for schools to be eligible to have 3 teams (D1+D2+JV). Although we are confident we will have enough players to meet the 3 team requirement, we need each parent to complete their son's on-line registration and submit player dues by the deadline to make sure our club meets the league requirement. Player registrations received after the September 15 deadline may become subject to availability. Payments received after October 1, 2008, will by subject to late fees.
If you have not picked up a player packet, they are available at 10648 Chestnut Ridge in the Canyon Creek subdivision.
If you have not already registered your son, please CLICK HERE and complete the on-line registration. If you have additional questions, please email admin@westwoodlax.org
