During the pre-season Coach Whelchel has been preaching to the D1 squad that he wants everyone to contribute to the scoring this year, and it looks like the team has taken it to heart. Seven different Warriors scored in the season opening 9-2 victory over Taylor High School from Katy on Saturday. Five of the nine goals were assisted, showing that the team is concentrating on playing the system and getting good looks.
Pierce Ingram and Cody Wetherald each scored two goals. Sam Jones, Hunter Morrison, Ty Huber, David Rakes, and Nick Ierullo netted a goal apiece. Jones, Morrison and Ingram each tallied an assist, as did Ryan Beauchamp. Keith Acker, who switched from mid-field to defense for his senior year, contributed to the offense with an assist. An aggressive defense led by Ryan Cassidy frustrated the Katy attack and kept the pressure off the Warrior goalkeepers, with Zack Danielson notching two saves. Senior goalie Ryan Ashworth finished with a team-high 4 ground balls, and consistently hit the outlet passes on clears. Scott Morenz led the team in faceoffs, winning five out of six.
The Warriors next game is at Cedar Park on Friday, Feb. 1.
The D2 Warriors prevailed 9-8 in a hard-played "official scrimmage" against the Westlake JV. The back-and-forth game saw the teams trading leads until Westwood took a two-goal lead midway into the second half. After Westlake tied the game, Westwood scored the winning goal two minutes into overtime.
Like the D1 squad, the D2 varsity team spread the scoring, with five different players tallying goals, six off assists. Steven Daly led the scoring with 3 goals, followed by Michael O'Beirne (2G/2A) and Miles Pierce (2G). Aaron Tasset and John Moya scored a goal apiece. Ryan Dittmer, Andrew Campbell, Ian Simpkins, and David Kim each notched an assist. Michael O'Beirne also scooped a team-high 6 ground balls. On the defensive side, Brian Finnegan had an excellent game in goal, bagging 5 saves and 2 ground balls.
The D2 Warriors next outing is at the Aggieland tournament on Feb. 9-10 in College Station.
