Westwood Lacrosse

Evan Whelchel - D1 Head Coach

669-6625

Evan Whelchel

Evan began playing lacrosse in Massachusetts as a young child because his older brothers both played. After moving up and down the East Coast his family finally settled in Austin and Evan played indoor lacrosse in the summers with the club then referred to as the Westlake Wahoos.

For High School, he attended St. Mary's Hall where he would serve as team captain for three years, MVP for two years and All-State for his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. In his senior season, Evan lead St. Mary's Hall to their fi rst Texas State Championship appearance. Upon graduation he attended Franklin and Marshall and played as a midfielder on their varsity squad.

After graduation Evan returned to Austin and helped found the Austin Crossfire Lacrosse Club (2001-05) and served as VP and Team Captain while he worked locally for Dell. From 2003 to 2005, Evan was head coach at St. Michael's, and he coached the Central Division All-Star team, as well as ran summer camps for Lone star and St. Mary's Hall. Evan left Austin for a year to be the full-time varsity assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan which went 12-3 in the NCAA DIII tournament this year before he decided to return to Austin.

Evan is the Sales Manager for Blackboard, the market-leading online software solutions company for higher education. Evan is married and he and his wife Megan welcomed their son, Jackson Henry, into the world on Christmas day 2006. Jackson is the self proclaimed youngest Westwood Warrior fan ever!

Kenny Pailes - D1 Goalie Coach/Defensive Coordinator/Medical Trainer

844-0037

Kenny Pailes

Voted both "Most Spirited" and "Class Clown" by the Westwood HS student body of 1994, Coach Kenny Pailes believes that everyone that plays lacrosse as a Warrior should play to win in a positive manner. Winning is the goal, but players must have fun and grow as young men to get there.

He also believes that the goalkeeper is the heart of the defense, and no team wins without a good defense! A goalie must lead the team's defenders to proper positions (yelling through a mouthguard), adjust the defense during a dynamic attack (more yelling - defenders are stubborn), anticipate the shooter's intentions (if he's even aiming), stop that hard rubber ball moving at speeds up to 100 mph (admire the bruise AFTER the game), and begin the team's transition into an effective offense (let's see what the other keeper can do). However, even the best Division I college goalies only save about 60% of the shots they face. A good goalie has to have heart, grit, and determination to keep standing between the pipes. You can do your part by cheering on the Westwood goalies: make sure they remember the saves more than the goals!

After lettering all three years of his high school lacrosse career, Coach Pailes took the lessons he learned as a goalie to an entirely different playing field: public safety. He spent over a decade as a fulltime firefighter, EMT-I, and hazardous materials specialist. He now serves as a homeland security and hazardous materials consultant to fire departments, military units, and private companies across the nation.

Jon Greenwood - D2 Head Coach

771-3570

Jon Greenwood

Jon Greenwood began playing lacrosse in 1990 for Cy-Fair High School in Houston, TX, playing during the school's first-ever lacrosse program. During his freshman and sophomore years, Jon played defense and was a starter his sophomore year. After their goalie graduated at the end of Jon's sophomore year, the coach asked for volunteers for the position so Jon stepped up to fill the role. He started every game and was captain for his junior and senior years. Jon also began racing mountain bikes during high school, traveling around Texas to race.

Jon's love of the game extended to college where he played goalie at Stephen F. Austin and the University of Texas at Austin. Jon finally graduated from UT in 1999 and moved to Houston with his fiancé, Giselle, who's also a UT alum. There, he began coaching the JV lacrosse team of his old alma mater, Cy-Fair. Jon and Giselle got married in the summer of 2000 and soon thereafter, moved to New York City.

In 2003, Jon and Giselle decided to settle down and plant their roots in Austin. Jon was an assistant coach for a Town and Country team then volunteered last year to help out with the JV team at Westwood. Jon, Giselle and their dog, Bailey, just bought their first home in Cedar Park where they all look forward to another great year with the Westwood Lacrosse Team.

Frank Llamo - D2 Assisant Coach

659-9597

Frank "The Yak" Llamo

Growing up in a small village in the foothills of the Himalayas, my family and I led many great mountaineering expeditions. Because of my childhood as a junior Sherpa, my body is impervious to extremes of cold and altitude. On one trek up K2, I met a man, living in a cave, who told me about the wonderful sport of Lacrosse. It was then that the seed was planted.

A few years later, we moved to the States. Taking up residence in Houston, Texas, I was shocked and surprised that nobody played the magical sport of my dreams there. I persisted getting my first stick in 8th grade even though the only teammate I had was one of the walls at the school down the street.

During the summer between my 8th grade year and High School, my parents moved to Rochester, New York. I was overjoyed to see that this new city was a hotbed for Lacrosse. I was able to leave the wall behind and finally enjoy the game of Lacrosse with people. That spring I played on the freshman Lacrosse team at my high school splitting time between Midfield and Attack.

At the end of my sophomore year I got horrible news, we were moving back to Houston. My father's project was complete and the company he worked for wanted him in Houston. Upon our return Houston, I sensed something had changed. There were more people like me; people who played Lacrosse.

During high school at St. Thomas in Houston, a group of us got together and started a club team. We were not very good but we loved to play. I continued to play middie and attack, occasionally doing a stint in between the pipes; I harvested coconuts as a child and was not afraid of being hit by the ball.

As a student at Texas A&M, I joined their Lacrosse team. At the time, they had the best program in the state. I started playing more and more middie because I loved to face off . I got good at facing off (68-win percentage) and with bad knees brought on by my rough childhood; I was a natural candidate for the position.

After graduation, I started a club team in Houston. We played two seasons before my work brought me to Austin. At the time, Austin only had one men's Lacrosse club team, so I helped to start another. I played about a year until my body said no more.

Here I am today, with my fi rst coaching job, helping others to learn and enjoy the sport that I have loved since my youth.

Mike Nuhn

Coach Nuhn started his lacrosse career at Westwood in 1996 as a midfielder. The following season he switched to goalie for the next year and a half. He then moved to defense in the last half of his Junior and Senior year. Coach Nuhn was also a defender for the Austin Lacrosse Club for 2 years. He was on the 2005 conference championship team at Texas Tech University, where he played college lacrosse for 4 years.

Coach Nuhn first coached in 1997 for a youth lacrosse clinic and really enjoyed it. He continued coaching here and there for more clinics until graduating from Westwood in 2000. In 2001 and 2002 he coached with Jim Mitchell until moving onto college. He worked primarily as a goalie and defensive coach. After moving back to the Austin area in 2005, he coached 8th grade teams at Town and Country in 2006 and 2007. He joined the current Westwood staff in 2006 as a defensive assistant.
